01:27 pm - Perfume: The Story of a Murderer, The Lives of Others
Perfume: The Story of a Murderer     .flv 9 MB
The full trailer for the movie adaptation of Patrick Süskind's novel about a man, born with no smell, who develops a superior olfactory sense, which he uses to create the world's finest perfumes. His work, however, takes a dark turn as he searches for the ultimate scent. So far it's only available in the flash format, but it's reasonably good quality. Here's a link to the first teaser in Quicktime format.
It'll be directed by Tom Tykwer (Run Lola Run, The Princess and the Warrior) and it will feature relative unknowns Ben Whishaw as Grenouille and Rachel Hurd-Wood as Laure, but there will also be Dustin Hoffman and Alan Rickman.
The trailer is in German, but I translated it as good as possible in such a short time. It's not the attempt to offer a perfect translation, just the basic information so that everybody can understand what's going on. You can find the result below the cut. Apologies for the mistakes.
(There are also a couple of pictures available from the movie.) Edit: Courtesy of [info]cleolinda, more and better hi-res stills from the movie. Additionally, about a week ago, German magazine stern published a couple of behind-the-scenes pictures. I have no scanner so I just took pictures of the pages, you can find them also under the cut.

The Lives of Others - Das Leben der Anderen     39 MB
Last week this movie won most of the important prices at Germany's leading film awards. It's about life in East Germany and what the Ministerium für Staatssicherheit (Ministry for State Security) did to their people.
What's great about the movie is that it's not just a dull movie about Germany history. It has a strong story, detailed characters portrayed by very fine German actors (the most prominent one internationally is probably Martina Gedeck who some of you may know from Mostly Martha) and it's also very well made on a technical level.
It should also be of special interest for people living in the US since it offers a glimpse of what may lie ahead of them if recent trends continue. After last weeks success I'm confident that the movie will get an international release in the coming months. Since again the trailer is in German, I once again put a basic translation at the end of the post.

Impressions of the shooting of Perfume: The Story of a Murderer.

Shooting in Barcelona. The crew had 24 hours to make a street in Barcelona look like 18th century Paris. The most stressful weekend of the shoot.

A larger version of the picture.

Shooting Wishaw/Grenouille in the Provence, France.

Producer Bernd Eichinger hugs Dustin Hoffman/Baldini.

Director Tom Tykwer trying to coordinate 800 extras.

Director Tom Tykwer discussing a scene with Rickman/Antoine and Wishaw/Grenouille.

Director Tom Tykwer directing the big orgy scene. 1000 people naked.

The boy who plays Grenouille as a six-year old. Tykwer and producer Eichinger.

Translation of the Perfume trailer.

Voice-over: "In the 18th century, a man lived in France who was one of the most ingenious but also one of the most infamous people of that era."
Voice-over: "His genius and his ambition were focused on the fleeting realm of scents."
Voice-over: "His name was Jean-Baptiste Grenouille."

Woman: "Eeeh.. Why are you doing that?"
Jean-Baptiste Grenouille: "I'm composing a perfume."

Guiseppe Baldini: "Every perfume has three accords."
Guiseppe Baldini: "That means it consists of twelve notes overall."
Guiseppe Baldini: "But an extraordinary perfume can only be created if you add a special ingredient."

Antoine Richis: "Last night I dreamt you are dead."
Antoine Richis: "Killed. Like all the other girls."
Antoine Richis: "No matter how his sick mind works, he won't rest until he gets you too."

Jean-Baptiste Grenouille: "Jean! Baptiste! Grenouille!"

Priest: "The Holy Christian Church imposes against this murderer, this demon, the punishment of excommunication!"

Soldier: "All the usual possible acts of grace of the deathsman are explicitly prohibited!"

Jean-Baptiste Grenouille: "The soul of all creatures is their scent."

*knocks*
Officer Wiesler: "Come in!"
Officer Wiesler: "Hands below the thighs, palms down."
Officer Wiesler: "What do you have to tell us?"
Suspect: "I did nothing."

Officer Wiesler: "If you want to know if someone's guilty there's no better instrument than interrogating him until he breaks."

Officer Wiesler: "Tell me again what happened on May 8th ..."

Officer Wiesler: "During interrogations you are dealing with enemies of socialism."

Officer Wiesler: "If you don't give us the names then we'll have to arrest your wife tonight. Do you want that?"

Voice-over: "In a system of fear ..."

Officer Grubitz: "Georg Dreyman, the writer. For him East Germany (GDR) is the greatest country in the world."
Officer Wiesler: "I would keep him under surveillance."

Voice-over: "... nobody is safe."

Secretary Hempf: "If you find incriminating material against him (Dreyman) you'll have a VERY good friend in the leadership."

Voice-over: "In a system of power ... nothing is private."

Secretary Hempf (in the car): Christa, you missed our date on Thursday. Quick, get in."

Voice-over: "In a system of dependency ..."

Georg Dreyman: "Christa!"
Christa-Maria Sieland: "Just hold me."

Voice-over: "... freedom is irony."

The sign shows the time and place for a meet-up.
Man with glasses: "I've become very interested in music."

Secretary Hempf: "Christa-Maria Sieland. If you break her neck or not is up to you. But I don't ever want to see her again performing on a German stage."

*knocks*
Officer: "State Security! Open the door!"
Officer: "Crowbar!"
Georg Dreyman: "What's the matter, comrade?"
Officer: "We have order to search your apartment."

Voice-over: "What has to happen so that YOU start to resist the system?"

Officer Wiesler: "Time for bitter truths."
Officer Grubitz: "There's something wrong."

Officer Wiesler: "Mrs. Sieland."
Christa-Maria Sieland: "Do we know each other?"
Officer Wiesler: "You don't know me, but I know you."

Officer Grubitz: "Are you still on the right side?"

Perfume is creepy, creepy and beautiful. From the trailer, you might almost think it was a film by Peter Greenaway.

Creepy indeed. But that was to be expected given the nature of the story.

Greenaway hasn't so far come to my mind. I didn't think that it's that creepy. But it's been a while since I saw a movie from Greenaway. ;)

Huzzah! Cheers once again!

And I suspect that the high-def QuickTime version won't be far behind! ;o)

I'm afraid there's no indication that this will happen soon. So far I've only seen German versions of the teaser and the trailer and I have never seen high-def versions German trailers before (though this would be a good start).
Today's trailer is taken from the official website that finally hosts some content. The only thing I expect is a 'regular' quicktime version hosted by the production company 'Constantin Film'.

The only hope would be if the US/international marketing campaign kicks off. Imdb lists now a fixed date for December 8th for the US, so there's a chance we'll get a US trailer version (withouth bare breasts, of course!) in the coming months.

I don't know the Perfume story at all...but...

Antoine and Grenouille...what's going on in that bedroom scene, as it were? hmmm.

If my memory serves me well, then there's a lot of things going on in the book. But not such things. ;)
