12:43 pm - Bright Star, In The Loop, Pope Joan, Jerichow, Beyond a Reasonable Doubt
Bright Star     3min footage 14MB
Relatively bad technical quality, sized to fit on a TV but to tide us over until an official trailer becomes available, more than three minutes of footage from the new movie written and directed by Jane Campion (The Piano, The Portrait of a Lady, In the Cut) that is currently screening in Cannes.
It's a drama based on the three-year secret love affair between 19th century poet John Keats (Ben Whishaw) and girl next door Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish), an outspoken student of fashion. This unlikely pair started at odds, but when Keats's younger brother falls ill the two are drawn together. Keats, touched by Fanny's efforts to help care for his brother, agrees to teach her poetry. By the time Fanny's alarmed mother (Kerry Fox) and Keats's best friend (Paul Schneider) realize their attachment, the relationship had an unstoppable momentum.

In The Loop     8 MB   Online
The US trailer for this dark, political satire based on the BBC TV series "The Thick of It". It looks at what might go on behind closed doors in London and Washington in the lead-up to a not-so-fictional war in the Middle East. It's filmed in a style resembling "The Office". Cast members include Tom Hollander, Peter Capaldi, Steve Coogan, James Gandolfini, Gina McKee, Anna Chlumsky and David Rasche who now made it into the trailer.
Just as funny as the UK one. Maybe funnier. Difficult to say. If you'd like to compare them yourself.

Pope Joan     17 MB
Full trailer for the German adaptation of Donna Woolfolk Cross' novel about a 9th century woman (Johanna Wokalek) of English extraction born in the German city of Ingelheim who disguises herself as a man and rises through the Vatican ranks and eventually reaches the papal throne. Also part of the cast are John Goodman, David Wenham, Anatole Taubman and Iain Glen.
I wrote a rough translation of what's being said in the trailer. You can find it at the end of the entry under the cut. Intentional or not, the dialogue sounds a bit stilted.

Jerichow     24 MB
I always feel a bit bad writing about a German movie (that's already out) that I haven't seen. But the US reviews that get currently published on the occasion of the limited release are very favourable and there's a good, subtitled trailer file available. It's a quiet, dramatic thriller that can easiest be described as a love triangle similar to the set-up of "The Postman Always Rings Twice" but adapted to a more local background. A younger man (Benno Fürmann from The Princess and the Warrior) starts to work for a man with a beautiful wife.
The film is from one of Germany's most recognised young writer-directors Christian Petzold. The NYT recently wrote an article about him and the recent developments in German cinema.

Beyond a Reasonable Doubt     HD480p 32MB   HD720p 93MB
Remake of a dramatic thriller about a high profile lawyer (Michael Douglas) who has an impeccable record putting criminals behind bars and is a shoo-in for governor in the upcoming election. But when an ambitious rookie journalist (Jesse Metcalfe) begins investigating him for tampering with evidence to secure his convictions, the district attorney's perfect record is up for scrutiny. Things get complicated since the journalist is also romantically involved with the Assistant D.A. (Amber Tamblyn).
I'd say Michael Douglas missed the point when he should've stopped making movies (same goes for director Peter Hyams). Let's hope they will at least have adjusted his complexion by the time the movie comes out.

Pope Joan trailer translation:
Narrator: Her identity was a secret. Her existence a mystery. Her life became legend. The unbelievable journey of a woman that started more than a 1000 years ago.
Insert: A true story.
Johanna: I'm independent, able to act and think freely. I want to live in a way no woman is allowed to dream of.
Johanna: God lead me here in mysterious ways.

Priest: Is someone among you who has to report a violation.
Monk: Brother Johan, are you hurt?
Johanna: Just a small cut.

Elderly Monk: you have to leave. Tell the Brother at the gate that I need him here. That will buy you time. May God be with you Sister.

Gerold/Wenham: This is Rome Johanna. Here, they get rid of people they don't like.
Voice: You're playing with fire Johanna.
Gerold: Every evening I will wait for you, right here. I don't want you as my lover. I want you as my wife.
Johanna: A life by your side would've pleased and fulfilled me. But this is my destiny.

Lothar/Held: Then it may be advisable to dispose of him.

Johanna: We have to stand by our beliefs. Even if the price may be high.

Only at the movies (or in the book). :)
It is a relatively big (for German standards) production and there's already a (small) UK distributor listed so you may have the chance to at least watch it on DVD one day. If you want to.

You're welcome!

I was hoping for at least a short, official teaser in shiny hi-def coinciding with the Cannes release. Alas, we have to take what we can get. :)
