06:42 am - Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, W, Ashes of Time Redux, Up Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince HD480p 41MB HD720p 60MB HD1080p 88MB So there will be real trailers after all, here's the first teaser. Since I know nothing about the series, here's an excerpt from the official description: Voldemort is tightening his grip on both the Muggle and wizarding worlds and Hogwarts is no longer the safe haven it once was. Harry suspects that dangers may even lie within the castle, but Dumbledore is more intent upon preparing him for the final battle that he knows is fast approaching. Together they work to find the key to unlock Voldemort's defenses and, to this end, Dumbledore recruits his old friend and colleague, the well-connected and unsuspecting bon vivant Professor Horace Slughorn (Jim Broadbent), whom he believes holds crucial information. And then apparently there are also a whole lot of teenage hormones going wild. Oh my!
W. HD480p 41MB HD720p 61MB George W. got the maximum sentence, and he certainly deserves it, Oliver Stone (JFK, Nixon, Comandante) is making a movie about him, and here's the first teaser to prove it. It's described as a comedic drama which will take viewers through Bush's eventful life, his struggles and triumphs, how he found both his wife and his faith, and of course the critical days leading up to Bush's decision to invade Iraq. Among the characters portrayed will be George W. Bush (Josh Brolin), Laura Bush (Elizabeth Banks), George Herbert Walker Bush (James Cromwell), Barbara Bush (Ellen Burstyn), Condoleezza Rice (Thandie Newton), Colin Powell (Jeffrey Wright), Donald Rumsfeld (Scott Glenn), Tony Blair (Ioan Gruffud), Dick Cheney (Richard Dreyfuss), Karl Rove (Toby Jones). Looks like it could be very entertaining. But to be honest, I really don't want to see a movie about George W. and all those other questionable characters. The only thing I want to hear about those guys is that they are tried for war or any of the other crimes they committed. But the fact that James Cromwell will have played Prince Philip and Bush sen. somehow amuses me.
Ashes of Time Redux - Dung che sai duk HD480p 46MB HD720p 112MB French 17MB Wong Kar Wai remastered/reworked/shortened his romantic martial art epic from 1994 for this year's Cannes Film Festival. Set in ancient China, it's about a fallen swordsman (Leslie Cheung) who is afraid of love after having his heart broken. But the bounty hunters that work for him (Tony Leung Chiu Wai, Jacky Cheung) discover the intangible secret of true love while he retains his attitude towards his fighters and the precious lessons that they have taught. Also part of the cast are Brigitte Lin, Tony Leung Ka Fai, Carina Lau and Maggie Cheung. I've never seen it and I would love to have a chance to do so on a big movie screen but so far I can only confirm a theatrical release for the US, UK and France. Also, an alternative, dialogue-free trailer from France.
Up 15 MB Very brief announcement teaser for Pixar's next animated movie to be released next May. It will be a comedic adventure that tells the story of a 78 year old man (Edward Asner) who spent his entire life dreaming of exploring the globe and experiencing life to its fullest. It seems as if life to have passed him by, until a twist of fate (and a persistent 8-year old Wilderness Explorer named Russell) gives him a new lease on life. Together they go on a thrilling journey where the unlikely pair encounters wild terrain, unexpected villains and jungle creatures. So far Christopher Plummer and John Ratzenberger are also listed in the voice cast. Co-directed by Pete Docter and Bob Peterson who previously were involved in the making of Finding Nemo and Monsters, Inc.

Comments:
YAY for a new Wong Kar Wai movie! Fallen swordsman + love = this can make me very happy!!!
I think so too! And maybe you'll even have the chance to watch it at a movie theatre. :)

I too am excited that Ashes of Time is being re-released. It's available on DVD here, but in a notoriously awful print with partially absent or incorrect subtitles, so it remains the only WKW-directed movie I've never seen. I hope you get to see it, too.
And oh, there was a Harry Potter trailer? I hadn't noticed. ;)
The fact that there are releases scheduled for the UK and France gives me hope that it will be shown here too. The release in France should at least mean that the movie will eventually turn up on the German/French TV channel. And your icon reminds me that only a few days ago I thought I would like to see "Chungking Express" again.
It was a secret! ;)

I would too. It's been a while.
It was a secret! ;)
Hahahahaha!
Hallelujah, they released a trailer! I was pleasantly surprised, it looks really good and I'm glad they seemed to have put an effort into giving another feel to the Tom Riddle scenes (Tom is the kid in the orphanage that many years later became Voldemort). I hope they focus on that, because so far in all the articles they had led us to believe the main theme would be the romance, even going so far as to call the movie a "romantic comedy". And that sounded particularly awful and misguided to me, considering the fact that the book's climax was one of the scariest and most horrifying things I have ever read.
To be honest with you, I'm afraid to watch the W. trailer. I just have this certainty that it will be cringeworthy and absolutely ridiculous, especially after reading some horrible excerpts from the screenplay. Stone has always been quirky and he mainly chooses to deal with controversial political topics, but I feel like it might be too soon for a Bush movie, and this will be either downright laughable or incredibly offensive. I guess his family's antics could make for an entertaining trainwreck, but there's nothing funny about an idiotic loser taking up office and helping cause more than a million deaths around the world. I really don't know what Brolin was thinking - his career was on the rise again and if (when) this flops, it could go downhill all over again.
PS- Thank you for linking to the Slate article, I hadn't read it before. :) And sorry for this loooong comment!
I read about the "romantic part". The second half of the official blurb for the movie/trailer was about it. Since it was so long I shortened it above to "hormones gone wild". ;) Not knowing what to expect, I thought the teaser was pretty dark. I mailed the links to a good friend who has two kids. They have read the books so it shouldn't be a problem but I still felt the need to mention the dark tone.
"W." is a bit of a problem. Even if it will be funny, I don't want to laugh about it. What's the point? I just want that guy to go away.
You're welcome! And apologising for long comments, while not explicitly forbidden, is very unnecessary. :)
First things first - Harry Potter. I just re-read the series and wish there was more of it, so I'm looking forward to this one very much indeed. The last two books are my favourites, so this should be enjoyable. W. - Not so sure. Ioan Gruffud as Tony Blair is a major headfuck, I don't think I could cope with watching that. Looks interesting enough, but I'll have to see how it reviews before I decide if I fancy seeing it or not. Ashes of time - it looks pretty good. I haven't seen the original though.. Something tells me adgy can tell me more about it. Up - that was brief indeed! The balloons are great, I get more impressed for each film how detailed animation is getting. I was watching Ratatouille and I was completely distracted by how real the fur was. As in, there were hairs rather than what looked like a body suit. Should be fun, as usual!
I'm still pretty clueless when it comes to the books. But I hope you won't be disappointed by the last three movies based on the last two books. :)
W.: So far I have major difficulties to imagine that I'll be able to enjoy watching a movie about that "topic". But we'll see.
Ashes ot Time: While not having seen the original version, I think there are mainly "technical" differences between the two. They tried to make the picture and the sound better and WKW probably made a few different cuts since it's my impression that he can never settle for a "final-cut". But Richard certainly can tell you more about it. Though he's been slacking off a bit recently, now that he has other interests. ;)
Up: In my view, in recent years, instead of closing, the gap between Pixar and other (US) animated movies even seems to steadily got wider. While Pixar always tries to tell a story the others mainly seem to repeat themselves and try to make a quick buck. And in addition to that they are also leaders on the technical side.
I came across a list of changes of "Ashes of Time". Apparently they are more pronounced than I first thought. The list is very detailed and can certainly be considered to be "spoilerish" so please decide for yourself if you would like to have a look. But I would still like to get the chance to see it on a big theatre screen.
Thank you so much for your links for the HP trailer. For some reason, I can't play it on my updated Quicktime, and when I play it in VLC, it skips a bit. Oh well. It's still a damned awesome trailer. You really should get into these books. They are just so, so poignant, moving, and powerful.
Hmm, don't know the reason why you can't use QT. It should play fine with an updated version. There are now different encodes available. One from Warner Bros., maybe you want to try those: 480p 720p 1080p. I'll skip the one from yahoo since they are usually the most difficult to play because of their very high bitrate. I also expect a version from the Apple site in the coming days. Having said that, I also have difficulties playing the trailer steadily but I blame my old computer. On my pc audio and video also doen't seem synchronised. But again, I think it's most likely that my computer is to blame for that. Thanks for the recommendation. But given the (sad) fact how little I read I don't have the intention to start reading them anytime soon. :)
You know, I forced and blackmailed my friend into reading the whole series, and she loves it now. She absolutely HATES reading, but because I forced her to, she grudgingly read the books, and...there is just so much in there to digest and to analyze. It's really a wonderful series. I'm an English major, and although I do not hold the writing as superior, god, JK Rowling weaves an amazing story, and I would rank these books as some of the most tragic stories ever in literature.
If I would start I would certainly want to read all of them. Which would take me quite some time. On the other hand I already know too much about the series from the movies I've already seen on TV, the trailers and things I inevitably read on the internet so my appetite for reading the series is really low. And it's not that I don't have other books that I would like to read. It's just that I'm usually too tired and prefer to watch a movie instead. :)
Actually, there's a LOT in the books that are not in the movies :D So, even though you have watched the movies, you don't get the FULL experience from them.
I appreciate your effort, but I'm afraid it won't work. :)

I'd say Benicio Del Toro was predestined to play that role. :) And the rest of the cast isn't too shabby either.

So (as always) I'm a million years behind on everything. But I heard from a friend yesterday that the new HP trailer was out, so I knew you'd have it. :)
I found it really dark and creepy. It's a good thing people know how the movie will actually play out because if this were an "on its own" movie, I would not see it. Too freaky/scary for me.
I hesitated a bit at first, but then I thought, why not post it, maybe some people still care about the Potter movies. ;) I also thought the teaser is pretty dark. I know it's purpose is to "tease" people but I'm not sure if it was necessary to make it that scary. But as you say, most people (including kids) will know the books so in general they know what is coming. Still haven't found out though why Gandalf (or is it Charton Heston ?) is in the trailer. ;)

Lol! Sure, one or two people might still be interested...

*grins*
I guess the girl in your icon is right. :)
Even though Wall-E hasn't come out in theatres yet, I'm really looking forward to Up, as any film whose focus is on the emotional, comedic or adventurous spirit of elderly protagonists is usually enough to interest me. I think too few movies treat the elderly with any kind of respect or heart, but that just might be the Golden Girls fan in me talking.
I couldn't have said it better myself. Especially since I have more frequent senior moments myself.
RIP Estelle Getty!
(bah... that's what I get for trying to reply quickly ;-))
Whee, I knew knew knew you'd have the Harry Potter trailers :)
I agree with what you said about the W movie. I have no interest in watching it, and I'm absolutely enjoying how the press here is treating Obama like a president already, not just a candidate. I hope Bush is enjoying his lame duck status. (I also hope we don't jinx Obama with all of our predictions of his victory...) Did you see the pictures of his visit to Berlin? It looked crazy..
As for Ashes of Time, I wasn't too impressed with it when I first saw it. Maybe because it was a late night, maybe because I just don't *get* Wong Kar-Wai (up there with Soffia Coppola's Lost in Translation; I fell asleep during In the Mood for Love ;-)), maybe because I'm obsessed with the source material that he used and the movie butchered the storylines (I understand, realistically, that it's impossible to fit all the stories in, but don't use the same freakin' names if they don't have any obvious relation to the characters in the story!). But eh, maybe I'm just picky :)
While I initially also had no interest in seeing The Queen, right now I certainly can see W. morphing into something equally interesting. If Stone wants to achieve something then the movie is at least 4 years or even 8 years late. I sure saw the pictures from Obama's visit. It was hard to miss it here in the media. :) Though it was a bit strange to see so many people gathering for a mere candidate from a foreign country. And the place where he spoke sure looked familiar. :) While I certainly wish that he will win, I think it's still a very open race. And I'm not sure how much he will be able to change (*). But he's certainly the preferable candidate and it's a step in the right direction. (*) For example: I just read this morning that he's now also for more drilling in the US and the release of the strategic oil reserve if necessary. While I can understand this position from a populist point-of-view I think it's a mistake. But let's hope he will follow the time-honoured tradition among politians that after being elected he barely remembers what he said before. ;) I can understand that someone has difficulties with WKW. I mainly know (and mostly very much like) his newer movies. I really like In the Mood for Love and I was able to "feel" 2046. I have recently bought the DVD of the latter but I kind of hesitate to watch it again since I'm afraid I won't be able to "feel" it at home on the TV. I also liked (the Faye Wong) half of Chungking Express and I would like to see it again to see if I would like the whole movie. However, there was recently Days of Being Wild shown on TV and I had to fast-forward a bit because I really didn't care. The only thing I realised was that WKW is quite heavily borrowing from himself in recent years since a few things looked very familiar. I could see that in his later movies too but since I don't know most of his old ones I wasn't aware of this. And for the record. I also like Lost in Translation. :D Johansson is bearable and Bill Murray is just great. ;)

Now that I'm finally caught up on my flist, I can look at all of the trailers you posted and actually comment on them! :)
Up: Aww! Very sweet (if short) so far. I love his "Afternoon!"
W.: This is definitely one I'd have to see in the theater; I wouldn't be interested once it hit DVD. I have to say, though, that when they showed "Dick Cheney," I actually thought they had gotten Dick Cheney. Wow, that really looked like him. Kudos to the makeup department and Richard Dreyfuss!
Always nice that you take the time to tell me what you think about the ones you watched. :)
Up: Just nice. Of course I wouldn't mind if it were a bit longer but it's all an "announcement teaser" should be. The "Afternoon" automatically makes you either repeat the line or at least silently nod your head towards him. Though maybe that's just me. ;)
W.: I'm afraid in this case I'm so far unable to come up with a reason why I would like to see it. Maybe I'll change my mind once we know what kind of movie it actually will be. But right now I doubt it.

Nope, not just you! I'm guilty of the nod as well! |
