12:06 pm - Happening, Flawless, Taken, Sex and Death 101, Mongol, Quantum of Solace The Happening 4 MB Yes, somebody gave him again some money, a first teaser for M. Night Shyamalan's (Lady in the Water, Signs, The Sixth Sense) new movie. This time it will be a paranoid thriller (surprise!) about a family on the run from a natural crisis that presents a large-scale threat to humanity. In case you're sensitive towards those things, judging from the trailer, it involves evacuating New York and people jumping off houses. Leading cast members are Mark Wahlberg, Zooey Deschanel and John Leguizamo.
Flawless HD480p 35MB HD720p 86MB Clip1 Clip2 Clip3 Clip4 Clip5 Crime drama set in 1960 London, where a soon to retire janitor (Michael Caine) convinces a glass-ceiling constrained American executive (Demi Moore) to help him steal a handful of diamonds from their employer, the London Diamond Corporation. Lambert Wilson ("The Merovingian") plays an investigator. Directed by Michael Radford (The Merchant of Venice, Il Postino, Nineteen Eighty-Four). Looks very stylish and I suspect Michael Caine will save the movie. Also, five (badly encoded) clips.
Taken 12 MB Full trailer for this action thriller in which a former spy (Liam Neeson) relies on his old skills to save his estranged daughter (Maggie Grace), who has been forced into the slave trade. Famke Janssen plays his wife. Produced and co-written by Luc Besson. Directed by Pierre Morel who made Banlieue 13 and who was the cinematographer for other action movies made by Besson's EuropaCorp production firm (The Transporter, Unleashed).
Sex and Death 101 25 MB Russian 17 MB Romantic (sort of) comedy about a guy (Simon Baker) who's life is turned around by an email, which includes the names of everyone he's had sex with and ever will have sex with. His situation gets worse when he encounters a femme fatale (Winona Ryder) who targets men guilty of sex crime. Supporting cast includes Julie Bowen, Leslie Bibb and Patton Oswalt. Written and directed by Daniel Waters who also wrote Heathers and worked on the scripts for Hudson Hawk and Batman Returns. Available reviews are all over the place and US theatrical release will happen on very short notice at the end of the month. Maybe a rental will suffice. Additionally, a Russian trailer.
Mongol 9 MB 6min clip 42MB A first English language trailer for this epic movie from Kazakhstan that recounts the early life of Genghis Khan who was a slave before going on to conquer half the world including Russia in 1206. At one point Khan is played by well-known Japanese actor Tadanobu Asano. Nominated for this year's Foreign Language Film Oscar. Also, a six minute clip.
Quantum of Solace 85 MB Yes, that's still the name of the new Bond movie. To be in theatres in November but if you already would like to get acquainted with the major new (and pretty) cast members Mathieu Amalric, Gemma Arterton and Olga Kurylenko, have a look at this short interview featurette.

You know, Lady In The Water only came out a year and a half ago, but it seems like aaaaages since we've heard anything from M. Night. That trailer didn't do anything for me, and I'm still a little bitter about how silly Lady was...but Leguizamo and Wahlberg have done good things in dramatic roles, so it might end up worth seeing.
I've seen 'Lady In The Water' only a couple of weeks ago when it was shown here on TV. I already have a hard time remembering it so I think my impression of it should be described as "Meh". ;) In general I love those mystery stories with some odd characters but I think by now Shyamalan has sort of an image problem. People have come to expect some twists and the last few times he failed to deliver a good story. Not sure how he might be able to break that cycle other than making a movie from a different genre to defy expectations.
According to imdb he even wrote the screenplay with specifically having Wahlberg in mind.
That new M. Night movie sounds like the premise of the Stephen King book Cell. Other than no mention of cellphones, but people seem to be behaving the same way seemingly for no reason.
This Sex and Death movie was on the internet last year some time, but it didn't seem like something I'd be interested in. I'll have to give it a shot if it's from the Heathers guy, though. As a rental, probably.
I'm not familiar with that book. But when I just had a look at imdb I saw that there are plans to make it into a movie next year. So it'll be interesting to see if there will be further similarities. Yes, the way 'Sex and Death 101' is being released indicates that some caution is in order. Waiting until it is available from other sources seems like a good idea.
You don't like Shyamalan's films much, do you? :D I hated Signs but liked The Village (I'm in that tiny minority). The truth is, after Sixth Sense he never quite got it. This looked scary, but not quite convincing.
I'm still excited for Taken, and this trailer is very promising. Any movie where Liam Neeson is badass and shows off his coolness is fine in my book. :D
Quantum of Solace. Hee. Hee hee. I just can't imagine the American teen audience getting behind that.
I wouldn't say that. It's just that he disappointed with his recent movies. While he always chooses interesting set ups his endings have tended to be a bit silly at times. Especially Signs, while my expectations for The Village were probably low enough that I didn't find it that bad. I think his main problem now is that he backed himself into a corner by always making similar movies. But who knows maybe he'll be able to surprise us again with something unexpected.
I'm still a bit afraid that Taken will be too much "revenge" movie that I don't necessarily like. If possible, I prefer my action movies with some (ironic) silliness. But I'm looking forward to read what people will have to say about it once the movie is out.
I've read what the title intends to describe but I still think it sound a bit like "Deathly Hallows". ;)
I am rather very fond of "Sixth Sense" and others. :P I haven't seen Mongol yet.. I have it at home but I didn't have a chance to watch yet. I feel very connected with Kasakstan - it is very close to my my home city. :D
I like The Sixth Sense too. I probably would've liked it even better if some annoying radio announcer hadn't spoiled the ending for me. And I liked the basic story of Unbreakable (which in some way is similar to our recently discussed Intacto). But after that it became a bit difficult. I would like nothing more than him making another movie that I like since I think he has some interesting ideas.
To a lot of other people I would mention that, as far as I know, the trailer is somewhat misleading since the movie isn't too much about battles and such but more about growing up and wide landscapes. But in your case I have a feeling that will even be a plus. :)
Yes, somebody gave him again some money, Ha. I... kind of loved that trailer. (It's better than the uber-dumb taglines from the poster anyway). I also haven't completely lost my faith in The Shyamalan. (I have yet to see Lady in the Water, though).
I wouldn't mind him doing another interesting movie. It's just that I think at this point he'll have to come up with something new but the trailer points again at the same scheme he used in most of his movies. So it will be difficult to convince me to give him my money at the box office. Later on TV it's highly likely that I will watch it.
On the poster it's interesting that the movie will open on Friday the 13th.
Ooh, Taken looks really good. I've loved Liam Neeson ever since seeing him in both Star Wars and Love Actually. ♥
He's one of the best, very versatile. Always willing to accept a new challenge. I don't think he's done an action movie like this before so it'll be interesting to see how it will turn out.
I loved Signs, but the more I learn about M. Night, the more I... okay, it's not like I dislike him, but there's something about him that seems so contrived. He's so often compared to Hitchcock and other directors that it's like he's become preoccupied with his own (undeserved, IMHO) legend-in-the-making. Do you know what I mean? Everything seems to revolve around building the oeuvre of Shyamalan-the-'Auteur'. I find that his gimmicks are wearing thin.
That said, the trailer for The Happening sure got to me. If nothing else, he can sure create mood. Stupid title, though. ;)
I know what you mean. I remember reading a detailed story about a meeting at a restaurant that took place between Shyamalan and a (respectable, well-meaning) studio boss. I think it was about the script of 'Lady in the Water' and the boss tried her best (I think it was a woman) to convince him that the script was flawed. Shyamalan didn't accept the critism at all and had to move to a different studio to make the movie, only to find out that the movie became a major flop. I thought by now he should have reached a point to be more humble and try his best to make a satisfying movie but I'm not sure if he's there yet.
The movie title tells us that it's an "art" film. ;)
Taken : I officially do not care what the movie is about, because it has Liam Neeson! *G*
Edit: In a good way. Because Liam Neeson is just awesome.

It looks so awfully serious. I wish it were a bit more 'ironic'. But let's see how it goes. |
