10:02 pm - Other Boleyn Girl, Definitely Maybe, Persepolis, Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day, National Treasure 2
The Other Boleyn Girl     HQ 18MB   HD480p 82MB   HD720p 110MB
Historical drama set in the 16th century that tells the story of two beautiful sisters, Anne (Natalie Portman) and Mary (Scarlett Johansson) Boleyn who, driven by their family's blind ambition, compete for the love of the handsome and passionate King Henry VIII (Eric Bana). While both women eventually share the king's bed, only one will ascend to the throne for a brief and turbulent reign that ends tragically with a swing of the executioner's sword. Kristin Scott Thomas and Mark Rylance are also part of the cast. Based on the novel by Philippa Gregory, screenplay by Peter Morgan (The Queen, The Last King of Scotland).
Someone from my flist who saw an early screening was quite pleased with the movie and with Portman's performance in particular. Though apparently the feedback survey had an option where you could tell the interviewers that the ending was "too predictable", so maybe there's a chance they will change the ending if the popular vote demands.

Definitely, Maybe     HQ 18MB   HD480p 55MB   HD720p 85MB
Romantic comedy about a 30-something Manhattan slut political consultant (Ryan Reynolds) in the midst of a divorce when his 10 year-old daughter (Abigail Breslin) starts to question him about his life before marriage. He attempts a "PG" version of his story and changes the names so she has to guess who is the woman he finally married. Is her mother Will's college sweetheart, the dependable girl next-door Emily (Elizabeth Banks)? Is she his long-time best friend and confidante, the apolitical April (Isla Fisher)? Or is she the free-spirited but ambitious journalist Summer (Rachel Weisz)? Written and directed by Adam Brooks who worked on the screenplays for Wimbledon and the second Bridget Jones movie.
Looks cute (but a little too sweet), though please keep in mind that my judgement is most likely impaired due to the appearance of Banks, Weisz and Fisher in the same movie.

Persepolis     HD480p 68MB   HD720p 123MB    Teaser 8MB
A full trailer for this very interesting animated movie that is the big screen adaptation of the autobiographical graphic novels written by Marjane Satrapi. It tells her coming-of-age in Iran during the Islamic Revolution. We see how the people's hopes get dashed as fundamentalists take power - forcing the veil on women and imprisoning thousands. Clever and fearless, she outsmarts the "social guardians" and discovers punk, ABBA and Iron Maiden.
I'm slightly confused by the subtitles since I thought it will be dubbed by Sean Penn, Iggy Pop and Gena Rowlands. The movie is France's official entry for next year's Foreign Language Oscar, it's also still in the running for Best Animated movie. Too bad the trailer tells us nothing about festivals and what critics think about the movie. And since the trailer isn't as good as it should be, an additional short teaser from Norway. More files in French can be found in an older entry.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day     15 MB
Romantic comedy set in 1939 in which a middle-aged London governess (Frances McDormand) finds herself unfairly dismissed from her job. An attempt to gain new employment catapults her into the glamorous world and dizzying social whirl of an American actress and singer (Amy Adams). Within minutes, the governess finds herself swept into a heady high-society milieu – and, by the end of the day, discovers her own romantic destiny. Ciaran Hinds, Shirley Henderson and Lee Pace round up the cast.
Looks lively and swinging.

National Treasure: Book of Secrets     Feat1 480p   Feat2 720p    Feat2 480p   Feat2 720p
After last week's trailer, two (somewhat similar) featurettes about the 18 pages missing from assassin John Wilkes Booth's diary and the movie in general that pretty much assure us that the sequel will be the best ever.

The Other Boleyn Girl: I like all these actors, but I have always liked Richard Burton's portrayal of Henry 8 in Anne of a Thousand Days best -- pompous, garrulous, hearty, not always very bright, a bit mental, etc. Everybody else (I'm thinking of the BBC/Showtime show, The Tudors) seems to be going for sexualized Shakespearean pathos(??!) with Henry 8, and, I mean, COME ON. It's a bit much.

Also not sure about this Mary/Anne dynamic. I'm not huge into considering Anne Boleyn as some proto-feminist icon, but the Bad Sister/Good Sister thing is-- er. A bit romance novel-y? Perhaps that is just the trailer, but still.

Oh who am I kidding, I'll still watch this.

Though apparently the feedback survey had an option where you could tell the interviewers that the ending was "too predictable", so maybe there's a chance they will change the ending if the popular vote demands.

I think this is hilarious! What other ending could there be?? Perhaps Anne Boleyn is secreted away before her execution and runs away to become a masked superhero-cum-pirate?? I swear there's an X-Men sequel in that. That said it's a lot of fun to watch Natalie Portman play someone (who is apparently) devious. She should do it more!

Miss Pettigrew Lives For A Day looks sweet, and the various Persepolis trailers make me very happy. As always, thanks for the links!

Since I always thought that Bana is a bit bland just the mentioning of Burton makes me laugh. :D
While watching the trailer I went a couple of times in my head 'Bitch-fight! Yes!' :D. Though since only Portman seems to be the bad one it won't be much of a fight. I also think of Johansson as being a bit bland so that's a bit of a problem for me.

I don't think they were seriously considering a different ending. Either it was a standard feedback form or they were maybe thinking about changing the flow of the movie to keep up the suspense a while longer. But of course it is a nice thought that they may consider changing the ending if enough viewers demand it.

You're welcome! :)

Burton's Henry would definitely kick Bana-Henry's ass. Jesus, DARCY could kick Bana-Henry's ass.

I watched the trailer again. The whole thing's a bit boring, no? I mean, for something so full of life and death and sex and vim, it's just all so standard-seeming. It's like all the emotional tension of the plot was laid out in the trailer, and it didn't really leave me wanting more. Especially since it makes the characters seem so one-dimensional.

I still vote for Anne Boleyn running away as a pirate. Maybe as an alternate ending on the DVD.

DARCY could kick Bana-Henry's ass.
Hell yes!

The trailer somehow fails to create some real tension and interest in the triangle. Though there are some nice dialogue fragments. As I said, I don't really care because of Bana and Johansson but I'm looking forward to find out more about the movie.

I still vote for Anne Boleyn running away as a pirate.
If that was an option on the preview feedback form then I'm confident it will happen. ;)

...to see how many times they can get the name "John Wilkes Booth" into their promos for NT2 before the entire American cinema-going public snaps to Pavlovian attention, and responds with "Abraham Lincoln's assassin, sir!"

All action-adventure movies should be so educational...

Marketing campaigns for Bruckheimer movies can be a bit deafening. But I can understand that he's excited that they even filmed scenes outside the US. ;)

And admit it, you can't wait for the campaign for Angels & Demons to begin. ;)

Ooh, a good batch of trailers!

The Other Boleyn Girl: I read the book a while back and really enjoyed it and I love that it's being turned into a movie. And I think the trailer looks really good, too. Makes me want to re-read the book, anyway, in preparation. :)

Definitely, Maybe: A lot cutesy, definitely, but I'm still interested. Plus, I really like Abigail Breslin.

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day: Frances McDormand? Amy Adams? Lee Pace? I am *so* there. =D

I think I would wait re-reading the book until I've seen the movie. :)

Definitely, Maybe: It will probably not surprise you if I tell you that I'm more interested in the grown-up women in the movie. ;)

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day: I'm happy to see that Amy Adams gets more roles after Junebug. It seemed to take a while until she was able to profit from her Oscar nomination. But that was probably due to the long lead times for movies.
And I'm looking forward to find out what Frances McDormand does with this (for her) slightly unusual role. So I really hope the reviews will be good.

I ended up seeing this movie earlier today. Very cute and the grown-up women you're more interested in? All very appealing, though you probably have a different slant on liking them than I do. :) But I swear the entire time Elizabeth Banks was on screen, I thought she was Amy Smart. I stayed to watch the credits just to verify and I was honestly surprised when I saw it was Banks.

Now I'm just waiting for Pettigrew to open. It's supposed to premiere at our local artsy theater this Friday. I have plans for that night, but the next night? I'm so there. :)

Not that I had any doubts, but thanks for the confirmation that all three women are appealing in the movie (I'm not ashamed to admit that I find all three of them quite attractive in different kind of ways). ;)
Since I'm much more familiar with Banks than Smart I don't think that would've happenend to me, but I can see their resemblance.

I don't think it will change the course of the world, but 'Miss Pettigrew' should be another enjoyable little movie. Hope you'll like it!

I think I've mentioned it before, but I really appreciate it that you're taking the time to come back to these entries. :)

I went onto the imdb.com forums after seeing the movie to see if anybody else thought what I thought, but apparently, more people think she looks like Rachel McAdams, which, since I can tell the two of them apart, no problem, makes me totally not see it.

Hope you'll like it!

Just a quick note to let you know I've added you to my f-list, and I came here via [info]cleolinda.

Persepolis looks stunning -- I'm so glad that they tried to stay as true to Satrapi's artwork as possible. Her books are amazing, so clean & simple and yet filled with just the right details. It's nice to see that the film looks lovely, and of a piece with the novels.

Like, did anyone actually go into the theater wondering whether Henry would chose Mary or Anne?

No, I don't think so. There was just an option on the feedback form. I think that either it was a standard form that's used for all previews or maybe they were considering cutting the movie differently to keep up the suspense a while longer until the inevitable ending.

Though there's always the option of an 'alternative ending' for the DVD. ;)

(I'm another person randomly showing up via cleolinda. I think that this journal is awesome, and hence am friending you ^_^)

I kind of really want to see The Other Boleyn Girl. Meaning I really should hold off on reading the book. I'm hoping that the "too predictable" ending doesn't have something to do with Anne's death, as that's something grounded in historical fact, to the point that you can't really take liberties with it...

No, I don't think they were considering changing the ending. It was either a standard feedback form they used or they were considering changing the flow of the movie to keep up the suspense. But it is an amusing thought. :)

Personally, I think holding off reading the book until after the movie is a good idea since in my experience the movie rarely holds up to one's own expectations. Which is only normal since I think a movie script usually has to be tighter so the book story has to be changed/shortened in order to make a good movie.

I can't watch the National Treasure trailers without thinking: Gee, American self-confidence must be in a really bad way if it needs to mythologise its own not-so-ancient history TO THIS ZANY DEGREE. The assassination of Lincoln? We're not exactly talking the Murder of King Tut, here.

It's the typical Bruckheimer over-the-topness. There's no place for subtlety. I had to laugh when they even mentioned Area 51 when they randomly listed conspiracies in one of the trailers. It's popcorn entertainment. Better not think too much about it. Though I don't want to know how many people afterwards think they've seen historically accurate facts and not something fictional.

(If this comment seems incoherent then it's because I still try to compose myself after your recent photo entry. :) )

What I wanted to mention before but I hesitated to go in that direction was 'creationism'. I can't think of something that has gone wrong on such a massive scale. It has influenced my belief that people are able to distinguish between facts and fiction considerably.

Definitely, Maybe: "Kid, let me tell you a story. The story of How I Met Your Mother." Of course, I'm a sucker for these kinds of romcoms (you know, the sweet ones laced with hot women), so I'm gonna watch it anyway.

Miss Pettigrew: Frances McDormand automatically makes this a plus in my book. Period comedies, another plus. Amy Adams, yet another. Lee Pace gets a check in my book on Pushing Daisies alone. Definitely will have to check this one out.

The Other Boleyn Girl: My vote for alternate ending: Rocks fall, everyone dies.
