11:54 am - Sweeney Todd, Awake, Love in the Time of Cholera, Mad Money, Sasquatch Gang, Diving Bell and the But Sweeney Todd A couple of days ago I came across an entry in overthemoo's journal that sheds some light on the question how much musical there actually will be in Tim Burton's adaptation. She assembled a list of all the songs that are in the movie based on information available from reviews from an early screening and it's safe to say that there will be a lot of singing. Take a look here for the song list as well as links to further information about the screening.
Awake HD480p 48MB HD720p 120MB Dramatic thriller about a man (Hayden Christensen) who suffers "anesthetic awareness" and finds himself awake and aware, but paralyzed, during heart surgery. His young wife (Jessica Alba, not wearing fake contacts for a change) must wrestle with her own demons as a drama unfolds around them. Lena Olin plays his mother, Terrence Howard a doctor. Sounds and looks a bit creepy but nevertheless interesting.
Love in the Time of Cholera HD480p 36MB HD720p 96MB 10 Clips Hi-def quicktime version of the trailer for the big screen adaptation of Gabriel Garcia Marquez' epic love story. The drama traces the Job-like vigil of Florentino Ariza (Javier Bardem), who waits for more than half a century to claim the hand of Fermina Daza (Giovanna Mezzogiorno), the woman he loves. Dr. Juvenal Urbino is played by Benjamin Bratt. Also part of the cast are Javier Bardem, John Leguizamo, Catalina Sandino Moreno, Laura Harring, Hector Elizondo and Ana Claudia Talancón. Directed by Mike Newell (Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, Donnie Brasco, Four Weddings and a Funeral). Of course it still has the ridiculous voice-over but at least the picture looks better. And I totally forgot to mention last time that the movie features original songs by Shakira. For good measure, a link that leads to ten clips.
Mad Money HD480p 44MB HD720p 117MB Comedic crime thriller about three female employees (Diane Keaton, Queen Latifah, Katie Holmes) of the Federal Reserve who plot to steal money that is about to be destroyed. Hard to say which one of the three characters is portrayed more implausible. Maybe I should make a poll.
The Sasquatch Gang 21 MB Slacker comedy about a couple of fantasy/sci-fi aficionados (among them Justin Long) who stumble onto some huge footprints in the woods. A local cop, a reporter and a renowned Sasquatch authority investigate, while two neighbours hatch a scheme to profit from the situation. I've lost count of how many movies copy the style of Napoleon Dynamite which I didn't find too funny in the first place but Long's growing popularity after Live Free or Die Hard may provide some interest.
The Diving Bell and the Butterfly - Le Scaphandre et le papillon HD480p 46MB HD720p 113MB Hi-def quicktime version of the US trailer for the autobiographical drama about former Elle France editor Jean-Dominique Bauby, who, in 1995 at the age of 43, suffered a stroke that paralyzed his entire body, except his left eye. Using that eye to blink out his memoir, Bauby eloquently described the aspects of his interior world, from the psychological torment of being trapped inside his body to his imagined stories from lands he'd only visited in his mind. Directed by Julian Schnabel (Basquiat, Before Night Falls). Cast includes Emmanuelle Seigner, Marie-Josée Croze, Patrick Chesnais, Anne Consigny and Isaach De Bankolé. Movie was part of the official competition this year in Cannes where it got very good reviews and Schnabel won the prize for Best Director.

Mad Money: Hard to say which one of the three characters is portrayed more implausible.
Lol! It looks like a cute movie. Probably one I'll wait for it to show up on video for.
The Sasquatch Gang: Despite the Justin Long appeal...this one did absolutely *nothing* for me. Bleh.
Ah well, you know I have issues with Diane Keaton. And I liked Katie Holmes better before her operation. ;D Those slacker movies are funny for about half an hour but I rarely like a whole movie of them.

you know I have issues with Diane Keaton.
You do? Did I know this?
Those slacker movies are funny for about half an hour but I rarely like a whole movie of them.
Yeah, some of them can be funny, but it takes a special kind of slacker movie to be funny for the entire movie.
I thought I've mentioned before that I don't particularly like her, but I'm not sure. Though I very much do like her in Annie Hall. :)
That's good about the songs remaining. I don't mind the cuts (the second Johanna would've been interesting, but even that doesn't always make productions) since Sweeney Todd is such a long musical with not much dialogue -- they do need to make the cuts.
I have no background when it comes to the musical so I'm glad that it's now clear what kind of movie it will be since I thought the trailers where somewhat ambiguous. To put it mildly. But it sounds like as if it will satisfy the musical fans.
I haven't seen the trailer for Sweeney Todd yet, but i'm curious as to what new awesomeness Johnny Depp and Tim Burton made again :) Thanks for the trailers, i know i never say it enough, but i really appreciate you putting them up here.
Thank you! That's very nice of you to say. Please stop by more often. :) Assuming that you didn't avoid the trailers because you don't want to get spoiled, you can find them here and here.
no no, i'm not worried about the trailers, i love to watch them, in some cases it amazes me how great they make the trailer that it actually makes the film itself look bad :P Thanks for the links!
The list of movies that had a better trailer than the actual movie itself is indeed long. They are like commercials, they always want to sell you something. ;)
Yeah, i guess that's the point, which makes it all the more worthy for us to follow what's happening in the trailerland ;D
Watch out for a commercial in my next journal entry. :)
Cool! ooh, i'm curious :)
It's just an ad for televisions. But a long one. And pretty. :)
As long as it's pretty, long doesn't matter ;)
As promised, I've included it in my latest entry. Now you can judge for yourself. :) It's directed by Hong Kong director Wong Kar Wai, and it borrows heavily visually from his two movies 2046 and In the Mood for Love.
I didn't have the chance to see it yet, cause my internet connection is failing me every time, but from the little i've seen, it looks good and if i'm not mistaken i also liked the music :)
Too bad! *shakes fist at internet* ;) Of course the story is kind of important too but with movies from WKW it's often a special mood he creates with the visuals and also the music/sound. Of course, the effect is better on a big movie screen.
There's also been a link to a "small" version of the short but that file is also about 60 MB big so I guess it wouldn't make much of a difference if you want to download it. If you continue to try to watch it: Good luck! :)
Just to make sure, you did notice that the entry with the short also has a trailer for the new movie from the director of "Primal Fear"? :)
oh man, i can't believe it took me this long to finally check back any messages :( Seriıusly, if internet was anything solid, i'd beat the crap out if it. evil = me :D
oh, i'm definitely gonna check out that trailer, Primal Fear is one of my very favourites :)
If I may ask, are you still accessing the internet from the UK (like it says in your profile) or are you back in Turkey?
yes you may :)
i'm in Turkey for now, actually that is the reason i have problems with the connection from time to time, and my computer does this little trick where it says other connections are found and cuts me off right away, i have no idea why :/
Your internet problems were the reason why I suspected you might be in Turkey at the moment. :) But it was just a guess since I remember how someone else who only recently moved to the UK waited five months until British Telecom finally weer able to make her internet access work. And just this morning my DSL connection went dead for more than an hour. Woe! I used my old regular modem to check some important things. Now it's back and I hope it will stay that way.
Maybe your computer doesn't register properly when you are disconnected, especially when the disconnect is because of network problems. The PC might still think he's connected. Sometimes unplugging and re-plugging the cables helps. But that's just a guess.
When i'm in the UK, i'm usually staying on campus, so i guess the internet connection is not as much pain as it would be trying to set up one in your home.
I hope it stays that way too :)
Maybe you're right, next time i'll try the cables, my sis also suffers from the same problem so i'm guessing something just might be up with our connection in general :) if only it wouldn't disconnect whenever i'm trying to download something :)
If it happens (more or less) always when one of you is downloading something then there's obviously something wrong. Are you both accessing the net by using the same connection or does each of you have a separate line?
We use the same connection, i'm actually planning on calling the tech guy who also installed the whole system, and hopefully he'll be able to figure out what it is and fix it :)
Maybe a good idea. I mean it's obviously important that you two have flawless access to the internets. For your study. And such. ;) I hope he can help!
oh yes yes, for the sole purpose of study.. :D
Of course!
What a cute little devil! :)
I can't wait for "Love in the time of cholera" - I think voiceover for anything Gabriel Garcia Marquez' makes sense, his prose is so gorgeous!
It may be okay in the movie but I think it doesn't sound good in the trailer. I think it makes the movie look cheap. I was getting slightly worried about the way the promotion of the movie was handled (the ten clips were released just a couple of days after the first trailer file which is highly unusual) but now there's a first review linked at imdb and it seems to be fine. Maybe I have overestimated the importance of the movie for the US box office since it has no big (US) stars in it.
Re: Love in the Time of Cholera -- at least they have actual Spanish and Latino actors (unlike, OH GOD, House of the Spirits with WINONA RYDER), but I'd feel better about it if it was a South American production. This movie reminds me of Memoirs of a Geisha -- tons of visible research, a play for 'authenticity', a metric ton of shininess, but... eh. Or maybe it's just that I dislike the story. ;)
Every trailer for The Diving Bell and the Butterfly takes my breath away. Emmanuelle Seigner looks great as well.
It's probably still hard to pull off a production of this size with South American money. But as you point out at least things have changed compared to 15 years ago that now enough Latino actors are (relatively) popular enough worldwide so that US and European actors don't have to play the parts. There are a lot of French actresses in that movie. Also Anne Consigny and Marie-Josée Croze. :)
I saw the trailer for Love in the Time of Cholera earlier this week when I went to see Michael Clayton. It looks to be a refreshing film. Or at the least a beautiful one. I just hope it won't be disappointing as I'm finding a few of the films I've been waiting for this year to be.
As for Mad Money...how is it Katie Holmes just made me laugh? Even more so her being awkward-funny. Maybe I'm a bit too easy right now because I'm in a quite gloomy mood. Anyway, I'm agreed on the 'implausible' factor. I mean, really?
Still looking forward to see Michael Clayton once it comes out here some time next month. I was getting slightly worried about Love in the Time of Cholera by the way the promotion for the movie was handled but I yesterday read a first review that was linked at imdb and it seems to be fine. Thankfully I didn't have too much real disappointments so far this year but no real positive stand-outs either. If I may ask, what movies did disappoint you the most so far? I'm afraid Katie Holmes will never be the same to me after she hooked up with that other guy. ;) Sorry to hear about your gloomy mood. But I can tell you that you make very amusing videos. :)
Michael Clayton was AMAZING. There was absolutely no action - not that my movies need any, I prefer them not to unless necessary - but my point in that is that it was so unbelievably intense without any action. I loved it. Me and my friend were discussing it all night.
Hm, okay, I was looking at my list of films watched this year and it actually doesn't look like I've had many disappointments. Weird. Maybe it's just because I watched several crappy movies? lol Or maybe I'm thinking about films I wanted to see and then the [trustworthy] reviews ended up shutting them down. Elizabeth, Darjeeling Limited, etc. Not that Darjeeling looks to be horrible, just a bit disappointing is all.
Katie actually seems so mature next to him, it's hilarious. But that's Tom's doing mostly. Definitely not gloomy anymore. Had some drinks, watched the disappointing but hell of a USC game. I just moved to SC, so I'm new to this crazy football town thing, but I enjoyed myself.
haha I regret posting those every following morning, but I still continue to post them every night knowing that. Not quite sure if I'll ever learn.
Now I'm even more confident that Michael Clayton will be my kind of movie. Thanks! :)
The amount of so-so reviews of Elizabeth also influenced my stance on the movie recently. The Darjeeling Limited never really was on my must-watch list since after The Life Aquatic I realised that Wes Anderson somehow always seems to make (more or less) the same movie again. Very amusing and pretty movies but I thought it will be enough to catch it on TV one day. The one movie that I found most disappointing so far was The Lookout. It didn't make a whole lot of sense to me. Maybe I was expecting too much.
Good to hear you're feeling better! I don't know much about your kind of football. As you know, we here mainly play the other version. The one played by foot ;). When it comes to US sports then I'm a little interested in basketball.
While in general I absolutly hope you'll be able to learn things, in this particular case I hope you don't. ;) Wanted to confirm earlier that there's indeed a sound/picture delay towards the end of the recent video but you already figured out yourself that it's photobucket's fault. Do you already upload a .flv file? Maybe it would be different if photobucket doesn't have to change the file format. But that's just a guess.
That's true. (re: Wes Anderson) And actually, come to think of it, I was a tad disappointed in The Lookout as well. I too expected soo much from it, and then it turned out to have this entirely different feel about it and then just how everything carried out - it wasn't what I expected. But overall, it was still pretty great. But I think I could only get a couple more viewings out of it and I wouldn't be too interested in seeing it again.
Yeah, I don't normally watch it at all. But everyone here gets really into it, and the mascot and colors and all that are all over the place. Even in Japanese restaurants! lol It's insane. Actually, I was at a Japanese resaurant last night and I understand it was a Friday night but even so - they were playing dance/techno. I... I don't know. I was grooving in my seat while eating sushi. It was weird.
lol Well, I appreciate that. Yeah, I'm gonna have to see if iMovie has a .flv option. Or if I can just change it myself. Macs seem to be pretty good about letting you change something to whatever format you want.
I know they tried their best to make it seem plausible but it didn't make a lot of sense to me why Gordon-Levitt's character hooked up with that gang. That's where the whole thing fell apart for me. And as much as I would like Isla Fisher to chat me up, it was just a bit too much.
How's that for a melting pot. American Football, sushi and techno music! And after your videos I can even picture you grooving along while eating. :)
I have no experience when it comes to making movies (or editing/processing them) so unfortunately I'm of no help. I only know there are a lot of programs available that let you switch formats. Hope you'll be able to figure it out.
Dammit, if it's got Justin Long in it, I'm seeing it!
Who cares if I lose a few hundred IQ points >.>
It may indeed cost you a few points. Just make sure you have enough left. :)
The new trailer for Love in the time of cholera looks - dare I say it?- a lot better. Still a little cheesy though. And I'm afraid to watch the clips, I want to remain blissfully unaware of what the actual movie is like.
Stop the presses! Jessica Alba in a drama? But if Lena Olin is in this too, I'm there.
Pst, it's the same trailer. Just in much better technical quality. ;)
And she has her eye colour back. Now if she would stop dyeing her hair .... I always liked Lena Olin. For a long time I had a small poster from The Unbearable Lightness of Being hanging in my room.
It IS? I didn't realize at all! I guess I didn't remember the original very well. *shrugs* Seems the quality improvement made a few scenes stand out.
She'll never stop dying her hair. I guess she wants to be as white as possible (she really doesn't want to be thought of as a Latina). I like her too! My cousin used to have a poster of that film on his wall, with Lena on it. And it wasn't even the one with her headshot. It was the other one. :D
My best guess would be that she changes her appearance to hide the fact that acting itself isn't really her strength. ;)
Mine was the head shot with the hat. :)
Ah yes, I love the shadows in that picture! The poster I mentioned looked like this picture. :D
I knew what poster you were talking about. ;D You're probably familiar with it, mine was this one. |
