12:52 pm - Spiderwick Chronicles, In the Valley of Elah, Get Smart, Fred Claus, 1-18-08
The Spiderwick Chronicles     HD480p 41MB   HD720p 99MB
First trailer for Paramount Pictures' attempt to establish a franchise based on a children's book series. Peculiar things start to happen the moment the Grace family (three kids and their mom) leave New York and move into the secluded old house owned by their great, great uncle. When the three kids start to investigate the strange disappearances and accidents that seem to be happening on a daily basis, they uncover the fantastic truth of the Spiderwick estate and of the creatures that inhabit it.
Cast consists of Freddie Highmore, Mary-Louise Parker, Nick Nolte, Joan Plowright, David Strathairn, Seth Rogen, Martin Short and Andrew McCarthy (or at least their voices). Directed by Mark Waters (Just Like Heaven, Mean Girls). Now I don't know what age group they are targeting but to me this doesn't look like a trailer for a real kids movie.

In the Valley of Elah     Rapid HD 49 MB    Online
War drama directed by Paul Haggis (Crash). It tells the story of a war veteran (Tommy Lee Jones), his wife (Susan Sarandon) and the search for their son, a model soldier who recently returned from Iraq but has mysteriously gone missing, and the police detective (Charlize Theron) who helps in the investigation. Jonathan Tucker, Jason Patric and James Franco are also part of the cast.
Seems like the first trailers for Oscar hopefuls are starting to emerge. File so far is only available in streaming format, hence uploaded to rapidshare.

Get Smart     Rapid HD 25MB    Online
First short teaser for this big screen adaptation of the popular TV series from the 60s to be released in June next year. It stars Steve Carell as secret agent Maxwell Smart, Anne Hathaway as his partner Agent 99, Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson as Agent 23, Terence Stamp as key KAOS operative Siegfried and Alan Arkin as the Chief of CONTROL. Directed by Peter Segal (The Longest Yard, 50 First Dates, Anger Management).
Again, streaming only. If you already downloaded the Valley of Elah trailer and want to avoid the rapidshare restrictions, try disconnecting and re-connecting your internet access to get a new IP address. I'll change the links once I find downloadable versions.

Fred Claus     HD480p 50MB   HD720p 122MB
Full trailer for this comedy about the Brothers Claus. Fred Claus (Vince Vaughn), Santa's (Paul Giamatti) bitter older brother, is forced to move to the North Pole. Other remarkable cast members are Miranda Richardson, Elizabeth Banks, John Michael Higgins, Rachel Weisz, Kathy Bates and Kevin Spacey. Directed by David Dobkin Wedding Crashers.

1-18-08 - Untitled J.J. Abrams Project - Cloverfield     HQ 15MB   HD480p 34MB   HD720p 69MB
The official release of the mysterious but very effective teaser for this movie produced by JJ Abrams that's shown before Transformers. There still isn't much known about the movie, the imdb plot outline reads: "Revolves around a monster attack in New York as told from the point of view of a small group of people." So far the marketing department has decided that it's the best to use the release date as the preliminary title.
Speaking of Transformers, a funny audition clip of a robot has surfaced.

Man, when I first saw the filename for the Transformers audition clip, I was thinking that maybe it was Hiro Nakamura for some reason. Why there would be a Robo-Hiro, I have no idea.

Even though I've never seen a second of that TV series I was at first thinking along the same lines. :)

I highly recommend it. :-) Also, it appears that Masi Oka, the guy who plays Hiro, has a role in the new Get Smart movie as well. (Also watched and downloaded that; it gives me renewed confidence in their choice of Steve Carrell as Maxwell Smart.)

I tend to stay away from TV series. The danger that I get sucked in is too high and I already spend too much time watching movies. :)

Get Smart could be fun. And not just because of Carrell but also The Rock, Arkin and Stamp. And Hathaway doesn't hurt either, assuming she tunes down the make-up. ;)

Downloaded several trailers, but haven't looked at them yet.

When I heard that Steve Carrell had been tapped to play Maxwell Smart in a new "Get Smart" film, my first reaction was "Yes! Perfect!".
He's a short funny guy with the right sort of deadpan delivery and he's perfect for the role.

I saw "Transformers" on Saturday (and had lots of fun) and saw the "01-18-08" trailer. It looks like it takes the sheer-panic mad-dash-for-survival vibe of the "War Of The World" remake, replaces the Martians with just one monster, and puts the "Blair Witch Project" handheld camera spin on it.
Also, the marketing campaign is weird, with fake websites and bizarre references. [info]cleolinda has some interesting info here about it all.

Sooooooo, Rachel Weisz won't do "Mummy 3", but she'll do "Fred Claus", hey? I see how that is... :)

I think the whole cast of Get Smart has potential. What worries me a bit is the director and the fact that they start marketing it a year in advance which hints they'll want to make it a big summer movie for a mainstream audience which will probably mean compromises.

I would say you summed up what so far is known about "01-18-08" very well :D. I like that Abrams acknowledged that all of this means nothing if the movie doesn't deliver. Encouraging!
I have a look now and then at Cleo's journal but I want to stay away from the scavenger hunt. I sometimes have some actual work to do ;).

Another thumbs-up here for the Get Smart casting. :o)

Oddly enough, the current Prime Minister had a similar experience to poor old Maxwell's in that first part of the trailer. Only he was trapped in a toilet, and had to 'phone for help to get out. Blair took the call...eventually. (It's one of the "highlights" of Alastair Campbell's diaries.)

No wonder Brown got the short end of the stick. And I always thought their deal took place in a restaurant. :D

Of course it's on the night when I need to get to bed early that I end up watching near all of the trailers you posted.

The Spiderwick Chronicles: First of all, I love the cast. Second, it looks kind of like a mixture between Bridge to Terabithia and Jumanji and *insert kid's fantasy movie here* but it intrigued me enough (mainly because of the cast, I admit it) to put all of the books in the Chronicles on hold at the library so I can read them before the movie comes out.

Get Smart: Steve Carell! I'm there. 'nuff said.

Fred Claus: I *do* like Vince Vaughn and this has a surprisingly solid cast, but I dunno. I may catch this one once it comes to video.

1-18-08: Definitely intrigued, but if later previews show it to be too horror-ish, then I won't see it. =/

I'm sorry! But it was quite a good batch for a Tuesday. Thanks to the mid-week release of that wizard-boy movie. :)

Spiderwick Chronicles: A trailer leading to reading all the books is always a good thing! I certainly agree with the description of your mixture. I thought the trailer is a bit scary for a kids' movie but maybe you can shed some light once you've read some of the books and the full trailer comes out.

Fred Claus: I also found the cast remarkable. A few names that you usually wouldn't expect in a movie like that.

1-18-08: My guess at the moment is that it may depend on your limits on what you call 'horror-ish'. I think it's more a monster+destruction like movie. But of course they can be quite scary too.

Oh, yeah! Whatshisname was coming out... ;)

I doubt, though, that the movie will follow the books too closely. :(

The parts of horror movies that I really hate is the suspense of it, knowing that something is going to happen, that something might be around the corner, and having to just wait for it to pop out. *shivers* Ooh, I hate that.

You're probably right. But perhaps the books may still provide an indication if the movie has to be as scary as the trailer indicates.

I don't like that either. Why watch something (and even pay for it) that just wants to scare you? :)

Exactly! And I have friends who are huge horror buffs and they have a much higher tolerance for the scare factor. Not me.

There're always people who delight in that shiver of anticipation, of the tension building. It's another way to get an adrenaline rush.

It's the same reason why I continue to this day the cycle of installing System Shock 2, playing it for about four hours, get incredibly freaked out, uninstalling it, then picking it up a few months later, wondering why I stopped playing it. Part of me loves that thrill (and it's a quality game), and the other part of me doesn't like the constant agitation.

I guess you understood how I meant that. It was more a rethorical statement/question about me than about other people. I certainly understand why other people watch them (the torture-porn movies are obviously a different topic).

Now that installing and de-installing thing of the video game, that seems a bit odd to me ;). But seriously, I can understand that too. A good measure to "protect" yourself.

If you ever get to play System Shock 2, you'll REALLY understand. ;-)

Basically, it's brilliantly crafted--as a game, it is awesome, despite its crappy graphics (even for its time, it looked pretty bad). However, part of its brilliance is its use of sound--whether it's the music, the occasional voice from the dead, the whir of the ship's engines, or even nothing, it built up the atmosphere of dread so much that it just crept me out every single time I'd try to play it. Used to be I'd have to do multiplayer in order to get through the story, but alas for me P2 ceased to be in mid-2000. (Yes, the game's that old.)

As for gorno... I can't say I'll ever get it, either. There are kinks, and there are... kinks. *shudder*

i'd read about fred claus in people magazine just the day before you posted this, so i happily downloaded the trailer to check it out.

wasn't as interesting as i'd hoped it would be, but i'm still gonna keep my eye on it. figured the vaughn and giamatti match would be interesting, along with spacey.

The casting is also what I find the most interesting. While it looks funny, I don't really have the intention to see it at the theatre. One day on TV will suffice.
